Les Diablerets

Hotel in Les Diablerets

In 1980 we went to Switzerland for a 15 days holiday. We spent our time in the Vaudoiser Alps in Les Diablerets. Original we wanted to go in 1979, but everything was booked up in December 1978 already, so we had to wait another year. Unfortunately, it became not the vacation we expected, but that had nothing to do with the trip itself. But read our "diary" of this trip first and then you'll know!

July 22, 1980

First we traveled with a cab to our local train station to catch the train to Utrecht where the "Loreley Express" arrived around 9 o’clock in the morning. We had cabin 173 with the seats 42, 44 and 46. Another family was travelling with us in the same cabin. They had a son Jos and he was 19 years old. It was very hot in the train and during the whole holiday that wouldn’t change. We received a lunchpackage from our tourmanager, but Jenneke JR. didn’t feel well and she didn’t eat at all. In Mannheim the tourmanager left the train and in Baden Baden another one entered the train. Her name was (also) Jos and she staid with us during the rest of our holiday.

In Basel we had to leave the train and an hour free time before we took another train to Thun. Around 7 o’clock we arrived in Turn and had dinner in the restoration there. After dinner we had another on and a half travel by bus to Les Diablerets. It was very clearly outside, so we were able to see many mountains and that was very fascinated. It was not before 10 o’clock in the evening that we arrived in our Hotel.

Jenneke JR got room 201 on the second floor and her parents room 109 on the first floor. We went to bed almost immediately. It has been a long day today!

July 23, 1980

The sun was shining today and we had a day off. In the morning we walked to the city and watched the shops. We could see how lovely the Hotel was situated. In the afternoon Jenneke JR and her father walked to Vers L’église. In the shop we bought a costume doll of Vaud. The first one during this trip.

Today we went to Gruyeres and Murten. We started around 8 o’clock in the morning and drove to the Jaunpas where we drunk some cafe in "Bergrestaurant Taverne". Then we traveled to Gruyeres.

It was so hot there. When we had our lunch Jenneke JR. really became sick. For you who read our "diary" about our holiday in Menton (France) in 1974 already, knew that she had some difficulties before because of the heath and this was no exeption so she really didn’t eat much and she was glad when she could leave the restaurant. But outside it was even hotter, but it was much easier to breathe. Then we drove to Murten where we had our tea break and got the opportunity to visit the city. It was very hot here as well and we only bought some postcards and went back to the bus. It was Jos (the tourmanger’s) birthday today and she presented us some chocolate.

In the morning we bought some postcards for family and friend and another costume doll. This time from Bern. Jenneke JR. and her mother weren’t 100% yet so we decided to take a nap and her father drove to the "Glacier des Diablerets" with a big part of our group. We heard later that it has been a wonderful trip.

A lot of sunshine today but some thunderstorms as well. We drove to Lausanne in the morning. Jenneke’s mother staid in the hotel. She only traveled with us to Gruyeres and Murten on a daytrip and Jenneke JR. also missed two trips. In Lausanne was some time to walk around before we took a boat to Geneva. It was lovely. In Geneva we bought two other costume dolls (Vallais and Geneva) and had a little drink.

Around 6 o’clock there was another break in Vevey a nice little village near Montreux before we traveled back to Les Diablerets. We were just back in our hotel when a major thunderstorm hit us.

July 27, 1980

We drove to one of the mountains of Les Diablerets (Isenau) in the morning. The view was wonderful because the sun was shining again. We drunk some cafe here and received a little book of Isenau in which all the other mountains were mentioned too.

In the evening, Jenneke JR and her father drove to Gsteig. It was very hot here again and a drink was welcome. There wasn’t much to see in Gsteig. It’s just a little village with some houses and that was it at least that was what we saw of it. In Gsteig we bought a costume doll of Zürich and another costume doll of Vaud for a friend of jenneke JR.

In the morning Jenneke JR and her father made a walk through the woods to the "Grande Eau". In the evening we went to "Zweisimmen" and then to "Rinderberg" with the longest "Gondelbahn" of Europe. These "eggs" were a real experience, but Jenneke JR. thought that these were comfortable enough to go for it! In the eggs it was so hot but on the mountain it was so cold, we all guess that there it was that half of the group catched a bad cold.

Zweisimmen

After Zweisimmen, we drove to "Lenk" to watch a waterfall and drink some tea. We were back in our hotel around 5 o’clock, just in time for our dinner.

July 2, 1980

It was time to post our cards to our family and friends and we also bought a little St. Bernhard’s dog in plush. In the evening Jenneke JR. and her father planned to travel together to "Montreux", but Jenneke JR. became so very ill in the little train that she left the train halfway and her father traveled to Montreux alone.

We didn’t realize ourselves that the train only past the station of Le Sepey once in the two hours and that Jenneke JR. had to wait till 4 o’clock before she could travel back to Les Diablerets again! It’s not such a good idea to do that these days, to be alone as a woman in a totally strange country in a village you don’t know either. When her father returned to the hotel too, he bought some postcards for the family and a costume doll of Montreux for his daughter. He told us later that in the train to Montreux he realized that he had to stay with his daughter and not to leave her alone there. Luckily nothing happened! During dinner, Jenneke JR. laid in bed and slept.

July 30, 1980

Another hot sunny day. Jenneke JR. was still ill and so was her mother so her father traveled alone with the group to "Val d’Annivers" and "Sion". He bought here a costume doll of Sion and a typical calendar of Switzerland.

Wallis

After the lunch, they drove to "Grimentz". Jenneke JR. and her mother saw the bus coming down from the mountain in front of the hotel when they sat on the balcony of their room.

The whole family made a trip through the woods behind the hotel. We also slept during the evening and had a drink in "Auberge de la Poste" in Les Diablerets later that day.

August 1, 1980

It was a national holiday today. Jos told us something about the legend of Les Diablerets which was very interested. Now we knew what the symbols on the flag etc mean.

We traveled through "Martini" and the "St. Bernhard" tunnel to the Italian city "Aosta" where we had a lunch. They sold a lot of plush dogs at the top of the St. Bernhard, but they were very expensive so I was glad I bought that other one already.

In Aosta, it was even hotter and we searched for a "cool" shop to walk around. We bought some postcards and two costume dolls of Aosta. After Aosta we drove through the "Monte Blanca" tunnel to "Chamonix" in France.

Chamonix

It was beautiful weather and it wasn’t that hot in Chamonix. We drunk some tea, bought a costume doll of the city and drove back to Les Diableries. Tonight we had a special dinner. Food etc. was exposed on long tables and you could take what you want. Jos told us, that we were very lucky, because we have had two of these special dinners. Other groups have had only one or none at all!

Later that evening, we watched the fireworks behind the tenniscourts. There was a party held until the morning for all the citizens of Les Diablerets so we didn’t get much sleep that night.

August 2, 1980

In the evening we went to "Gstaad". It was so hot in the post bus, because two English scoutgroups were traveling with us as well. We wanted to search for the chalet one of Jenneke JR’s friends staid a couple of years ago, but we couldn’t find it so we bought some cards, walked through Gstaad and went back to Les Diablerets around 5 o’clock.

August 3, 1980

Another day off and we just rest and bought some last souvenirs like a T-shirt of Les Diablerets.

August 4, 1980

This time, it was Jenneke JR’s father who didn’t feel well, but he traveled, with the whole group, to "Leysin" and "Villars". In Villars we had a cafebreak and time to watch the city and to buy some postcards. This time it was her father who missed dinner.

August 5, 1980

Time to go home. We had breakfast around 6 o’clock in the morning and then traveled by bus to Thun. From there by train to Basel and then one and a half hour wait before the Loreley Express arrived which brought us back to Holland. We were home again around midnight. Maybe you can imagine how glad we were this time to be home again!
