Hotel Prince de Gales
July 6, 1974
Today our holiday to "Menton" started. We left home around 3 oclock in the afternoon and took the train to Menton from the station in Amsterdam around 17:34. This trip was a marvelous experience, because we had a train that traveled overnight with a compartment for the three of us with chairs during the day that could be changed in beds for the night.

We passed Paris in the middle of the night without knowing it, because we were so fast a sleep and arrived in "Nice" around oclock in the afternoon. To Menton itself, we took a special bus which brought us to our "Hotel Prince de Gales" were we got the rooms number 53 and 57.

The Hotel was situated right on the sea, which was great. Every morning we had breakfast on the terras with a beautiful view on the water. In the afternoon we watched the WK of 1974. Unfortunately, Holland lost the game against West Germany with 2-1. In the evening we walked across the sea and went to bed around 10.

We walked to the fort of Menton in the morning and through the streets. It was very hot, we never realized it would be so hot there in July in the south of France.

Jenneke JRs collection of costume dolls became bigger today with buying two new dolls of Menton. We also bought some postcards of the city to send away and to save for the holidaybook. The map of Menton we received earlier was a great guide for us mentioning all kind of interested things and streets in the city.
July 10, 1974
We visited "Cape Martin" today with a beautiful view on Menton and in the afternoon we wanted to buy some hats to protect us against the sun so we went into the city. The buying was not a bad idea, because the sun was burning, and burning all day long.

Jenneke JR. and her father traveled to "Nice" today where they walked through the city and visited some interested things.
When they got thirsty they had a drink in one of the many restaurants. After a couple of hours, they went back to Menton to pick up her mother and had dinner in the Hotel.

Another real hot day and Jenneke JR. tried to swim in the sea, but that wasnt such a good idea. The sea was full with oil and when she came back to the Hotel, she had to clean herself from her head to her feeds and her swimming suit was ruined forever.
In the afternoon, the whole family visited "Monte Carlo". We tried to take a look inside the Casino, but Jenneke JR. was too young then to enter it (She was only 15 years old at the time). Well, there was enough to see in Monaco and we walked to "Le Jardin Lexotique" where a cactus was standing everywhere you looked.
We had never seen such big ones before. In a restaurant we had a drink. Limned for Jenneke JR. and her mother and a big beer for her father. He asked for a "big" one and indeed a very big one it was. The waiter brought a large glass of beer to our table. We all started to laugh, because it was really impossible to empty the whole glass without getting drunk.

Tomorrow it was July 14, a big celebrationday in France and we watched the preparations for this day in Menton.
July 14, 1974
Quatorze Juillet is the official name for this day in France. There was a parade in the morning through the streets of Menton and we watched the soldiers standing in the sun with their guns.
In the evening, there was a concert in the Casino to end this special day.
July 15, 1974
Today, another costume doll was added to the collection. The sun was shining again and we decided to walk under the trees in the shadow and drink some very cold things. In the afternoon we all had a little nap.
July 16, 1974
Early in the morning, we visited "the Museum" of Menton with paintings of Picasso. That was very interested and it was so cool there inside. We all think, Picasso was an excellent painter.
In the afternoon Jenneke JR. and her father paid "Le Jardin Lexotique" another visit.
July 17, 1974
This afternoon we went to "La Turbie" and after that we tried to drink something on a terras but there was too much wind and not a cold one, but a very hot one.
July 18, 1974
Today, we decided to take some rest and walked to the beach where we spent some time. In the afternoon and evening we walked under the trees again.
July 19, 1974
Surprise! It was raining a little bit today so we went to Monaco again in the afternoon where we visited the "Royal Palace".
Monaco
We also received a special payment of Monaco. They have their own money over there. After the Royal Palace we visited the "Musée Océanograpique de Monaco" with a lot of strange animals especially in the fish category.
July 20, 1974
In a small castle we watched the collection of Jean Cocteau and after that, we went to "Laghet" to visit "Sancutaire de Notre Dame de Laghet Alpes Maritimes".
There was a concert of Russian people in the evening in Menton, but they played so terrible that we left the concert earlier and started to pack already for our travel home.
July 21, 1974
Our last whole day in Menton which we spent with taking the last photos of Menton.
July 22, 1974
Homecoming again. Early in the morning we traveled again by bus to Nice and from there we took the train back home to Holland. This time we saw Paris with the Eiffel Tower when we passed the station there. Around 7 oclock in the evening we were back home and we looked back on a fantastic time in Mention.
