Hotel Veld en Boszicht
by Jenneke JR.
It was in the summer of 1962 when I went with my parents to Nunspeet for the first time. I was almost 4 years old then and it was my first holiday there. My parents have been in Nunspeet in "Hotel Veld en Boszicht" before, but that was before I was born.
The first years of my life, we spent the holidays at home and even in 1962 my parents had their doubts about traveling away with such a young child, especially to a hotel. But the owners told them that that wouldnt be a problem and indeed, I loved it there. Even so much that we went back to this same hotel over and over again till 1971.
Of course, I dont remember much of that first vacation anymore, but I guess it has been the same wonderful experience as all the others that followed later.
In the beginning we had a room there for the three of us. Mostly room numbers 1 or number 3. I never had problems with the fact that both the rooms were situated above the two entrances of the hotel. Even not when I was little and went to bed early.

There was also a big diningroom in the hotel and when I grew older, I helped with putting the dishes etc. on the tables. I remember one of the last years that we staid there, that they had bought new dishes, but that I was the one who discovered that there was a drawing of a house on it, so they had to put the dishes on the tables with the faces of the houses to the chairs. That took much more of everyones time as they expected.

There was also a big open field laying behind the hotel were 2 horses were standing. Together with some other children who spent their holiday in the hotel, we got the opportunity from time to time to feed these horses. I also made some friends there, who spent most of their holidays in Nunspeet the same time as we did. That was so great to see each other again after a whole year. We even have contacts with some families we met there.
When I was 5/6 years old, I also got the opportunity to ride my first bike at one of the streets. The streets were very quiet there and it was a good way to practicing. Mostly we hired bikes to ride on or we sent our own bikes, before we left Den Haag, to Nunspeet. To make some trips in the neighborhood. But sending our own bikes away was over, when some wagons of the train were involved in an accident and our three bikes had to be repaired first before we could use them. We had never seen such a mess before! When I returned home later, I got my own first bike. Heres a photo of me with one of my (later) bikes.
After a couple of years, the owners of the hotel got a babyboy. We became friends and during the holidays we spent a lot of our time together, because in the highseason they didnt have much time for him and his babybrother who was born some years later.
Across the street was a deer-park situated. We got some bread to feed them and after awhile the animals even got to know us. I guess, they feel sad when we had to leave them behind after 2/3 weeks.
I dont know or you know this already, but the Veluwe is one of the places of Holland where most of the rain fells down every year and unfortunately, Nunspeet isnt an exception. There has been days during our holidays that we looked outside the whole day "hoping" that it would be dry again and during one of these holidays it became even worse. It was raining from early in the morning till late in the evening. There were a lot of children around and we played in the congress- annex billiards-room of the hotel. My parents bought a big jigsaw puzzle for us and everybody (guests, owners and the hotel staff) helped us with putting the puzzle together. That was so great. When we had to leave, we numbered all the pieces and finished the puzzle later at home.
The "city" of Nunspeet was a real nice one. Small but with a lot of shops and a big market. And on walking distance of the hotel.
The last time we visited Nunspeet was during the Christmas holidays in 1971. We just bought our new house by then, but we didnt know that when we made our reservations earlier that year. But it was a "White Christmas". With snow laying on the houses and the streets. Just perfect.
Many years later, I was on a camp as a Brownie leader, my parents went back to the hotel for a visit. They had build a whole new part on the hotel with rooms for even more guests. I never returned to Nunspeet so far. Only see the hotel when Im crosing the station when Im visiting friends which are living in the North of the country. Only that few, is enough to bring back a lot of memories of some marvelous holidays in the past.
